Epic Book Haul: Part One of Three

Yes, you read that right–this is only part one of three! I haven’t done a book haul post in four months, and as you can imagine (if you know how addicted to books I am), I’ve had quite a few books arrive in boxes over that time. Hence, the need for a multiple-part book haul. And the reason this one is so freaking

Epic Book Haul

Without further ado, let’s get started. The books are listed and grouped in no particular order, so enjoy the randomness.

V.Thomas Pynchon

Book Haul Thomas Pynchon V.

You had me at “wild,” “macabre,” and “the unknown woman of the title.”

The Game-Players of Titan, Philip K. Dick

First, look at that cover! I love it. Second, it’s PKD. So of course I bought it.

And remember when books could be purchased by mailing in one of these handy-dandy forms? Ah, the good old days.

Heathenish, Kelby Losack

Book Haul Heathenish Kelby Losack

I got this baby for a whopping $4.50 on Amazon. It was some kind of freak pricing mistake. I like the publishing company and was intrigued by both the cover and the blurb on the back:

…even though there are grammatical mistakes.

The Zen of Horror, T.N. Kaylor

T.N. Kaylor and I have been Facebook friends for quite some time now, but I’m only now getting one of her books (I know–I’m so slack!). And what a perfect book to get.

To give you a taste, here’s the entry for today, May 31:

I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while, and I finally got it! Now just need to read the damn thing.

The OutsidersS.E. Hinton

Book Haul The Outsiders S.E. Hinton

Can you believe I’ve never read this book? Love the movie, so I’m sure I’ll be head over heels for the book (even though the cover is awful).

Adulthood RitesOctavia E. Butler

As you might have guessed, I’m a fan of Octavia Butler. She is flippin’ awesome.

Anatomy of an EpidemicRobert Whitaker

As someone who struggles with mental illness, I think it’s vital that I’m educated regarding the topic. I’ve heard only amazing things about this book, so I’m looking forward to cracking it open.

White Hot Truth, Danielle LaPorte

Book Haul White Hot Truth Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte is, as my friend who recommended this book calls her, “one badass chick.” I’m currently making my way through her book The Desire Map, and I know I’ll get a lot out of this one, too.

Don’t believe me? I just flipped open to a page, and here’s what it said:

Believe me now?

So that’s it for this part of the epic book haul.

The above books were purchased via AbeBooks.com, Amazon.com, and Collectible Science Fiction, which is becoming something of an obsession of mine. Seriously–if you haven’t visited CSF, if you’re into sci-fi and fantasy and the likes of Neil Gaiman and Octavia Butler, check his goods out. You won’t be disappointed.

What books have you acquired over the past few months? Share any and all recommendations below!

*Heads up: if you click on the links to purchase any of the mentioned books from Amazon, know that I’m an affiliate. Your purchase will help me keep this blog going (i.e., I’ll earn money to buy books that I will then write about).*

So I Took a Vacation from You Nutcases…

…and I missed you terribly. Well, not terribly, because I was on vacation, but I did miss you. I’m glad to be back into the swing of things.

I’m sure you’re all sitting on the edges of your computer chairs wondering: where did Katrina go? What did she do? Did she run into anyone famous?

This vacation’s destination was the fun and sunny:

St. Augustine, to be exact.

I’d never been, and getting a beach house with a pool (hello, double water and sun) sounded A-okay with me.

I spent all but one day doing this:

Reading by the Pool

But my husband and I did go into Old Town, which was a blast to walk through. And I dragged him to:

The Fountain of Youth Sign

Yes, I did drink from it. So I’m going to live forever now. Don’t act so excited–I know there’s envy in your heart.

An added bonus? There were peacocks–one of my favorite animals–everywhere. I decided they were the unofficial mascot of The Fountain of Youth, and then went insane chasing them and taking pictures:

And there were even white ones!

Overall, it was an incredibly relaxing vacation filled with books, tons of kitschy stuff I wanted to buy, loads of peacocks, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.

I’ll leave you with one such sunrise (the only one I got a picture of):

Oh, and I didn’t run into any celebrities. Sorry to disappoint!

What about y’all? Where are you going for spring/summer vacation?

Sorry for the radio silence, kids! Mama’s been on vacation, and (no offense) that meant vacation from you all as well. But more on that later. 😉

For now, check out this poem by The Naga. It moved me, and I’m guessing it will resonate with some of you also.

The Naga

More than ever, the world needs us, the world needs us now, us artists, be a writer, a painter, a poet, a dancer, a storyteller, a designer, build us the worlds that you have imagined, give life to our madness, show the world that it is not only about making money and children, that there are other ways to live life, to accomplish our goals, give meaning to our existence, because we artists never only live once, we live for every single day, we create, we make, we paint and write our souls and emotions into our creations, more than ever, in this age of war and craze, we need you, the world needs you, to create, to bring meaning and dimension to our reality.

I’m an Award-Winning Fool
May 3, 2017, 11:20 am

The lovely Estella Lynch nominated me for the Liebster Award, which is…well…I don’t have much info on it other than it’s a blogging award. So hooray!

liebster award

I’ve been  asked to answer some questions about myself and to nominate others to take part in the award. But as you all know, I tend to skip the nominating thing because I don’t want any of you bastards to feel left out.

On to the questions:

1. Which is your favorite blog post you’ve ever written? [Please post a link so I can read it.]

feature image for depression post

My favorite would be “Mental Illness: My Brain Demons Want Me to Fail” because it was the first time I was straight-up honest about my mental condition in such a public forum. It felt good to write that post and hit “publish.”

2. Do you prefer the city or countryside?

Due to my social anxiety, I prefer the suburbs or country. But if my social anxiety were nonexistent, then I would definitely be a city girl.

3. Cats or dogs?

Lucy the Conqueror

Lucy, the weirdest dog I’ve ever known (and loved).

Dogs. Always dogs.

4. Comedies or thrillers?

I have to choose one? I guess I’ll pick comedies, although my absolute favorite genre is sci-fi or horror.

5. Coffee or tea?

Um…neither. I’m a hot chocolate kind of person. Never really got on the tea or coffee bandwagon.

6. Words or images?

Images. I know, I know. I’m a writer, so I should pick words. But we’re being honest here, right? So I have to fess up: I choose images.

7. Meryl or The Donald?

Oh yeah? Well, I have a question for you: Am I uncool for having no idea what this question means?

8. Parties or private moments?

Private moments. See note about social anxiety above.

9. Are you a world-traveler or homebody?

I’m a homebody although I wish I were a world-traveler. That fun social anxiety I’ve mentioned twice already? It has a buddy called travel anxiety. They both live in a corner of my brain and plot ways to make me freak out.

10. What/who inspires you?

inspire me liebster award

Art, music, people who have overcome difficult situations, and nature.

11. Why blog?

I began blogging because I figured it was what was expected of me, given that I’m a freelance writer. But now I blog because I enjoy it. Quite a bit.

That’s all for now, folks. I hope your day is as far out and wonderful as possible.
